The Engagement Shoot Is Not About the Photographs

It is a rehearsal. The pictures are a by-product, and a useful one, but they are not the reason to do it.

What It Is Really Doing

Most couples have never been photographed properly and have no idea what it feels like. An hour beforehand means that on the wedding day they are not also learning that, on top of everything else.

It is equally a rehearsal for the photographer. You learn which side they prefer, who fidgets, who goes rigid when a camera comes up, and whether they can be left alone to talk or need constant direction.

Doing It Somewhere That Means Something

Somewhere they actually go beats somewhere that photographs well. A couple in a beautiful location they have no connection to look like a couple standing in a location.

The other advantage is that the pictures then have a use. They turn up on invitations, on the wall, and in the general run of things people give each other around an engagement, which is a season of its own; there are plenty of ideas for an engagement gift that work better with a decent photograph than without one.

Keep It Short

An hour. Ninety minutes at the outside. Everybody is self-conscious for the first fifteen and useful for the next thirty, and after that it stops improving.

Ending while they are still enjoying it is the entire trick, and it is the same trick as the wedding day.
