What a Second Shooter Is Actually For

Dana Whitfield · 27 July 2026

A photographer working unobtrusively at the edge of a room

Not a spare pair of hands and not half a photographer. A second angle on things that happen once.

Coverage, Not Volume

The value is simultaneity. One camera on the face coming down the aisle and one on the face waiting at the front is a pair of pictures nobody can get alone, at any skill level.

Two people shooting the same thing from a metre apart is not a second shooter, it is two sets of the same photograph and twice the culling.

Splitting the Morning

Preparations are the other obvious use, because they happen in two places at the same time and one of them is usually across town.

Agree who owns which room and who arrives where, in advance and specifically. Turning up to the same house is a wasted morning.

Being a Good One

Shoot what the lead is not shooting. Stay out of their frames. Do not talk to the couple about the plan, because there is one plan and it is not yours to change.

And hand over the cards. It is a strange thing to have to say and it comes up more than it should.
